Vitalik Buterin Donates $10M More to Fund COVID-19 Research

Ethereum founder Vuitalik Buterin, in a tweet on Thursday, revealed he would donate fresh funds to support COVID-19 research. Buterin pleaded the support alongside Polygon founder Sandeep Nailwal, with whom he collaborated in allocating $100 million for the course last year.

As described in the tweet, Buterin sees projects like the COVID-19 research as high-impact and has decided to keep investing in the sector. Buterin, Nailwal, and Crypto Relief, a community-generated fund dispenser owned by the Polygon founder, have decided to invest another $100 million to fund research in pandemic aversion and other related areas.

Funding for Global Solution

Vitalik noted that COVID and future pandemics are global problems that require a proper scientific approach to curbing them. The Ethereum owner hopes that the funds donated will help bluster research that would put COVID to bed. The funding would also erect public health facilities where people could easily get medical attention when necessary.

A part of the research also focuses on improving ventilation, using high-efficiency particulate absorbing (HEPA) filtering, and experimental technologies like UVC irradiation. The project generally aims at indoor air quality, as COVID and other pandemics are airborne.

Crypto Collaboration Against Pandemics

Vitalik speaking on the collaboration with Nailwal, said: “ I’m really happy @sandeepnailwal and @cryptorelief shares this views and have agreed that supporting this new initiative also serves to further the core mission of CRI. @Cryptoelief has put in 90M USDC from the original $SHIB donation, and I’m adding another 10M of my own funds.”

The Covid Relief was founded by Nailwal in 2021 after the pandemic subsided. Aided by Butelin, the emergency relief fund has given out over $58 million in pandemic grants to the public while still holding $20 million in its purse.
