Prominent gaming hardware maker Razer could yet be facing another data leak. In the early hours of Monday, Razer said it was currently investigating a possible data breach.

Razer Faces Potential Data Breach

Over the weekend, a hacker with the pseudonym ‘Nationalist’ posted on a dark web forum, claiming to have obtained stolen data from the gaming company.

The hacker claimed to have stolen Razer’s sensitive information, including source code, encryption keys, database, and backend access logins. To support their claims, the hacker provided a screenshot showing a list of files and folders from different directories reportedly originating from Razer.

Hacker Offers to Sell Stolen Data for $100K in XMR

On the forum, the hacker offered to sell the stolen data for an asking price of $100,000 in the Monero (XMR) cryptocurrency. The hacker added that they are willing to listen to offers lower than the asking price.

Unlike Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) transactions that are fully traceable on the public blockchain, XMR uses a technology known as ring signatures to ensure that the senders and recipients of a crypto payment cannot be identified.

This means that the use of XMR, in this case, presents difficulties in tracking the movement of funds between involved parties as well as revealing their identities.

While the claim’s authenticity remains unverified, Razer said they have been notified about the matter and have commenced investigations.

Not the First

This is not the first time Razer is facing a security breach incident. In 2020, the American-Singaporean gaming company suffered a data leak that exposed the personal and shipping information of approximately 100,000 Razer customers to the public.

Razer sued its IT vendor Capgemini for causing the data breach after a former employee at the latter company accessed the configuration file of a server and disabled the line of code relating to the security settings. Razer said the security breach caused it to suffer roughly $7 million in losses.

While investigations are ongoing, only time will tell whether the latest security breach is linked to the one Razer suffered in 2020.
