MetaMask Adds Solana Support Through New Integration

metamask

MetaMask, one of the most widely used web3 wallets, announced an integration with Solflare to launch Solana Snaps. This new feature is designed to afford users the opportunity to manage their Solana holdings directly from their MetaMask accounts, eliminating the tiring process of installing a new wallet.

Snaps are software modules that can be incorporated into the MetaMask wallet for different add-on use cases, such as making the wallet compatible across various blockchain ecosystems with specialized code.

Until now, MetaMask users could only have access to new features built by MetaMask developers. However, with this new development, SOL and Solana-based NFTs can be managed directly on MetaMask wallets. Moreover, it will also facilitate interaction with various decentralized applications (DApps) within the Solana ecosystem.

Filip Dragoslavic, Solflare co-founder, said that this integration will offer a more seamless user experience, erasing the friction of installing a new wallet, which has stopped many potential Solana users from interacting with the chain. He continued:

“Solana has an incredibly vibrant ecosystem of apps of which many are only possible on Solana. This integration could be a game-changer to introduce the biggest user base in Web3 to just try Solana and see for themselves”.

Users can connect with Solana by visiting Solflare’s website or linking their wallet to any Solana (SOL) application. By following the installation process, customers can bridge their EVM assets into Solana.

Other Snaps

However, Solflare is just one of the 33 other Snaps that Metamask launched. The Snaps focuses on transaction insights, interoperability, and notifications. They are aimed at expanding its use on blockchain networks that are not natively compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Other Snaps include Bitcoin-based Zion, StarkNet, WalletGuard,  and Sui Wallet.

Currently, MetaMask’s parent company Consensys has audited and authorized the available 34 total Snaps. The team said that over 150 developers worked to develop the Snaps.

Christian Montoya, a senior product owner of MetaMask Snaps, said that this permissionless framework will become more reliant on a decentralized community. Unlike the way Apple vets its App store, she added that the task of evaluating and approving new Snaps will be carried out by the community instead of Consensys employees.
