The security of the social platform Twitter has come under scrutiny once again following the compromise of a crypto influencer’s account. Hackers gained unauthorized access to the Twitter handle of crypto enthusiast and YouTube influencer Ben Armstrong, also known as BitBoy Crypto, stealing over $700,000.

BitBoy’s Twitter Account Hacked

Self-proclaimed crypto detective ZachXBT was the first to share the update about the account breach. After gaining access to Armstrong’s Twitter handle, the hacking group added a phishing link to a malicious crypto project.

With Armstrong’s popularity and one million followers on Twitter, unsuspecting users interacted with the phishing webpage. This caused them to lose over $700,000, which is still held in the hacker’s Ethereum wallet address.

According to ZachXBT, this is not the first time the same hackers will conduct attacks on Twitter accounts to facilitate crypto scams. Through on-chain analysis, Zach revealed that the hacking group took over eight Twitter accounts in the past weeks. These attacks have led to the loss of seven-figure amounts.

The on-chain detective noted that Twitter Support needs to increase its response speed, as this will help curb the spread of such exploits. Users would have less chance of falling prey to Twitter hacks if they “use a security key instead” instead of SMS two-factor authentication, which leaves them vulnerable to Sim Swap attacks.

Meanwhile, there was no public comment from BitBoy’s Twitter account at the time of writing, suggesting that he had regained access to the handle.

Twitter Handle Hacks

The past few weeks have seen a new wave of Twitter hacks targeting crypto enthusiasts and companies. Hackers recently compromised the Twitter account of famous Bitcoin influencer Peter Rizzo. In April, hackers hijacked the official Twitter account for the crypto exchange KuCoin, netting $22,600 from unsuspecting users.
