News of an AI-based Trojan virus called SparkCat used to steal crypto has taken the market by storm. The virus was first detected by Kaspersky.
Mainly institutional investors seem seriously threatened by the existence of the virus. That said, the fear is legit as the new Trojan can sneak into otherwise common apps like utilities, E-Commerce, and messengers.
The app was first detected in 2024, March. Records collected yesterday suggest that people downloaded apps from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store containing this virus at least 242000 times.
How Does SparkCat Work?
This stealthy app works with OCR to scan image galleries. At the same time, it can trace sensitive data on your device using machine learning. Once scammers behind this virus get hold of your vital crypto details, siphoning your hard-earned coins will be a matter of time only.
There have been acute cases in the last 3 months where crypto holders’ accounts have emptied in a few seconds. It is the first of its kind that has made it to the public app stores. The situation is not only alarming. It is also one of the biggest failures of the tech platform and blockchains used by cryptocurrencies.
The Platforms Are Swift to Act on It
Apple and Google are advanced in making a move. Within a matter of a few days, at least 20 apps infected by the virus have been deleted from the Store. Android to step ahead. The Play Protect feature was upgraded to protect users from this virus.
But recent news flowing in has startled developers and users alike. If Kaspersky were to be trusted, this virus is still in the open. Meanwhile, the danger is now greater than it seems. SparkCat is removed from Apple and Google stores. But it is still prominent in the unofficial app stores.
Chinese connection with the virus is also prominent. The coding is in Mandarin. But no usual group of cyber hackers have been spotted so far.
A Kaspersky manager stated on Monday that the AI-powered attacks are tremendously sophisticated. We barely stand a chance to withhold the attacks in one go.
Ripple effects expected
The threat of SparkCat can impact trade beyond imagination. There could be massive sell-off trends and that’s what the phishing virus wants in reality. It can therefore get maximum chances to prey on frequent transactions. One leaked transaction would create a gateway to infest a lot of other cryptocurrency accounts.
Analysts say it’s essential that advanced AI-based trading platforms increase investments to make their stage secure and transparent. It could be a bigger challenge for the crypto investment community.
