NFL’s Russell Okung Will Receive $6.5M of Panthers Salary in Bitcoin

American based National Football League (NFL) star Russell Okung will become the first in the competition to have his salary paid in Bitcoin.

The 32-year-old Carolina Panthers left tackle is due to receive a $13 million payout for his services in 2020 as per his contract with the club. However, he has opted to have half of the amount paid out in Bitcoin due to his commitment to foster the adoption of the cryptocurrency.

The payout is made possible by a partnership between Okung and Zap, a bitcoin startup that utilizes the bitcoin lightning network to offer faster and cheaper transactions.

Zap will receive fiat from the Carolina Panthers, convert it to Bitcoin, and then send to a cold-storage wallet held by the athlete. Reports suggest that more NFL players are also open to the idea and are in talks with Zap on making it possible.

Okung has been ever vocal in his support for Bitcoin, and first tweeted about his desire to get paid in Bitcoin back in 2019. Today, he confirmed that the dream had been realized, and only time will tell if more athletes will follow his footsteps.

Given that Bitcoin’s value has increased by over 270% since Okung’s first tweet, the athlete could be eyeing massive future gains if his belief in Bitcoin eventually pays off. The athlete regularly organizes Bitcoin events to spread the word about a cryptocurrency which he thinks “the world has never needed more.”
