Pump.fun Faces Lawsuit Over Memecoin Infringement Claims

The Internet culture has truly taken over the world. Even the trading community shows symptoms of this fever. As a result, memecoins have shot in popularity in recent years. But what are memecoins, and why are they relevant?

Memecoins are a unique breed of cryptocurrency based on meme culture and other popular internet tropes. Unlike traditional digital tokens like BTC and ETH, they have no technological foundation or use cases.

These coins retrieve their values from market speculation and community participation. Therefore, they can be subjected to the hype train. Moreover, they lack real-world use cases. Finally, they open up scopes for market manipulation, which is why seasoned traders often sneer at them.

A recent lawsuit against Pump.fun, filed by Burwick Law and Wolf Popper, is a testament to the paragraph above. The primary clause of the lawsuit states that every coin is created through the Pump.fun platform is laden with unregistered and infringed digital assets (DOGSHIT2), and the company wrongfully made $500 million.

Pump.fun Lands In A Proposed Class Action Suit

On January 30th, Burwick Law and Wolf Popper slapped Pump.fun, a popular memecoin creation platform by Solana, with a proposed class action suit. The primary clause of the lawsuit is that Pump.fun has been wrongfully using the logo/name of the law firms without prior consent.

Here is what Burwick Law had to say about the controversy on their X handle, “‘Burwick Law and Wolf Popper LLP Demand Baton Corp. DBA, PumpFun Immediately Remove Tokens Deployed On Th Solana Blockchain By PumpFun That Utilize Unlicensed Intellectual Property In An Effort To Impersonate Our Law Firms, And Remove The Likeness Of Any Employees Of These Organizations.”

The firms are asking to immediately remove the alleged infringed DOGSHIT2 token from their platform, including the logo and the name. While talking to Cointelegraph, Burwick Law stated, “class action filing last week, Pump.fun has issued over 200 tokens infringing upon the IP of us and our co-counsels brands.”

The firms also alleged that Pump.fun has not been transparent. The ‘anonymous creator’ feature of the platform has raised security concerns and accountability. Burwick stated, “The ecosystem exploits everyday people under the guise of crypto buzzwords, avoiding meaningful oversight.”

Endnote: What Is There In Store For Pump.fun In 2025?

2025 seems like a year of upheaval and changes for Pump.fun. In the light of recent development, there seems to be some serious concern regarding the legibility of memecoins. Therefore, 2025 will be a year of change and more stringent regulations for Pump.fun and other memecoin exchanges.
