Jack Dorsey Donates $10M to OpenSat for Bitcoin Development

Jack Dorsey

Former Twitter boss and BlueSky founder Jack Dorsey has donated $10 million to OpenSats, a non-profit organization that supports Bitcoin contributors. OpenSats confirmed that it had received the funds in a blog post on Thursday from Dorsey’s #startsmall initiative.

Sequel to the announcement, the non-profit organization stated that it would employ 100% of the funds to support open-source software development and projects focused on enhancing Bitcoin, Nostr, and other related technologies.

“We are delighted to announce that OpenSats has received a generous donation of $10 million from Jack Dorsey’s philanthropic initiative, #startsmall,” OpenSat stated.

OpenSats to Use $5M For Nostr Development

OpenSats will use half of the donation from Dorsey to develop the Nostr network, a decentralized protocol for distributed and free social networking systems. Created by Fiatjaf, the protocol came to the limelight after support from Dorsey and other influential people saw it reach 16 million users, of whom 500,000 use it daily.

To fulfill Dorsey’s donation ambitions, OpenSat will set up a committee to oversee the projects to which the money will go to. Fiatjaf and another user using the pseudonym NVK will be part of the committee, OpenSats confirmed.

OpenSats shares Dorsey’s vision that free software and open protocols are necessary for an all-inclusive social space in the future. The non-profit organization stated that digital totalitarianism will take over the modern society without software that protects users’ rights and freedoms.

Dorsey’s Bitcoin Belief Evident Again

The former Twitter boss has not hidden his support for Bitcoin and other open-sourced networks. Dorsey stated in May 2022 that he sees Bitcoin as the only candidate for a native internet currency.

When asked what he aims to see OpenSats do with the donation, Dorsey replied with a Morse code which, when interpreted, stated, “that Bitcoin becomes the native currency of the internet, and gets a native protocol for social media.”
