‘We’re Still Interested In Crypto, We Haven’t Given Up,’ Says CBOE CEO Ed Tilly

CBOE Global Markets

A recent comment by the Chief Executive Officer of CBOE Global Markets Inc., Ed Tilly revealed that the options exchange is making a move to return into the cryptocurrency space after several unfortunate related occurrences in the past.

When queried in a phone interview concerning the company’s plans of going into cryptocurrency again, Ed Tilly answered, “We’re still interested in the space, we haven’t given up on it.”

Regarding going into Bitcoin Futures again like in the past, he said particularly, “We’re keen on building out the entire platform. There’s a lot of demand from retail and institutions, and we need to be there.”

CBOE Global markets, founded in 1973, was formerly known as the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) Group before its name was changed in 2007 by its holding company, CBOE Global Markets.

The company is known as the world’s largest options exchange and it centres on individual equities, indexes, and interest rate contracts. It started its cryptocurrency journey in late 2017 when it became the first U.S. exchange to list Bitcoin futures.

However, the SEC extended the designated date for making a final decision on the filing from 45 days to 90 for reasons that they received about 1300 comments after listing the CBOE Bitcoin ETF application on the Federal Register and so needed more time to take action on the proposed rule change.

A few months after the extension, CBOE withdrew the proposed Bitcoin ETF rule change application with the U.S SEC.

Jan van Eck, the chief executive of VanEck who is listed as a party to the ETF proposal, revealed that the exchange took that action to avoid unfair automatic rejection since the SEC was delaying to announce a decision for the proposal.

After several backs and forth attempts at listing a Bitcoin exchange-traded vehicle, the options exchange is back in the game again according to the comments made by the CEO. He confirmed that CBOE filed with the SEC to list and trade the VanEck Bitcoin Trust earlier this month.  Tilly commented, “We’re very keen to move along approval for the VanEck ETF.”
