Bob Lee, the founder of CashApp and former chief technology officer of Square (later renamed Block), has passed away after a stabbing in San Francisco, according to a report by Sfgate. Lee died after being found stabbed in the 400 block of Main Street in SoMa in the early hours of Tuesday, April 4, 2023.
A press release from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) stated that officers responded to a report of a stabbing at 2:35 a.m. near a high-rise condominium building on the 400 block of Main Street at Harrison in SoMa.
Lee Succumbs to Stab Wounds
SFPD said, following a report of the incident, they arrived at the location and found the victim suffering from apparent stab wounds, which he succumbed to after being moved to a local hospital.
“Officers rendered aid and summoned medics to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts by first responders and medical personnel, the victim succumbed to his injuries,” SFPD.
The police department said the incident is being investigated by the SFPD Homicide Detail and that no arrest has been made concerning the incident. SFPD is also urging anyone with information concerning the incident to contact the department.
Dorsey Confirms Lee’s Passing
Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Block (formerly Square) confirmed Lee’s passing through the decentralized social network Nostr, saying that it was real as he has been getting calls concerning the matter. Dorsey eulogized Lee, saying he was instrumental to Square and CashApp.
The former UFC/MMA fighter Jake Shields also confirmed Lee’s death on his Twitter page. He said:
“I didn’t want to be the one to leak the name but now it’s out. Bob Lee is an extremely high profile tech guy so hopefully this will at least bring attention to these problems.”
Lee was the chief product officer of MobileCoin, the creator of CashApp, and the former chief technology officer of Square. He was a big supporter of the cryptocurrency industry.
