Bitrue halts $OKB deposits and withdrawals for mainnet migration to X Layer, ending ERC20 support. What does this mean for OKB's future?

Bitrue Suspends $OKB Amid Shift to X Layer

A major cryptocurrency exchange known as Bitrue has declared the temporary pause of deposits and withdrawals of the token known as the $OKB as part of a significant technical shift to the X Layer Mainnet. The upgrade will also formally stop the support of the ERC20 chain and will mark the beginning of a new phase of the utility token and its ecosystem.

On August 29, 2025 Bitrue announced that as early as on the mainnet is migrated, $OKB deposits and withdrawals are not available anymore. When the transition has occurred, the exchange will recommence operations, but no longer in support of ERC20-based $OKB. The migration is indicative of a larger industry-wide trend as initiatives are moving off of the Ethereum network and onto more affordable and scalable blockchain networks.

    What is $OKB?

OKB is the token of the utility of the OKEx exchange ecosystem which is one of the biggest trading platforms in the world. The token offers multiple perks such as a 40 percent discount on transaction fees to its owners, including the ability to access unique features and offers in the OKEx platform. By mid-August 2025, the price of $OKB was at $166.31 with a 24-hour trading volume of about 283 million and it thus enjoys a good presence and liquidity in the market. This migration is a continuation of previous migrations by large projects, including TRON switching to its own mainnet in 2018, which improved the network’s performance and decreased reliance on the Ethereum network.

The Move to X Layer Mainnet

Suspension of deposits and withdrawals implies that temporarily the user is unable to transfer $OKB in and out of Bitrue, so it can disrupt trading or liquidity requirements. After migration, token holders will probably have to perform a 1:1 exchange of ERC20 $OKB to X Layer Mainnet $OKB, much as other blockchain upgrades have done.
It is recommended that the users keep an eye on the official announcements of Bitrue to guide them through the migration process and schedule to prevent loss of access to their tokens after the expiration of the ERC20 support.

Moving off Ethereum in $OKB is the result of a larger trend in the industry that the largest exchanges and initiatives are building their own mainnets to enhance scalability and control. An example of this is Binance creating Binance Chain as a network to optimise BNB, and TRON and others did the same to use the limited bandwidth of the Ethereum network less frequently.
These migrations are frequently beneficial to security, and allow new functionality such as staking or governance, as well as long-term strengthening of token ecosystems.

    Looking Ahead

Although the short-term impact would be a disruptive one, the migration may signify the beginning of a new bullish phase of the expansion of $OKB in case the X Layer Mainnet does not fail to keep its claims. Faster speed, lower charges and the possibility of new applications could help to increase usage and quarterly burns helps to maintain value.
Users ought to remain vigilant to Bitrue and OKEx updates as the procedure progresses and especially on swap procedures and deadlines.
