Elon Musk, serving as the U.S. government’s cost-cutting czar, recently made a surprising claim he has found at least 14 “magic money computers” within federal government departments. These machines, according to Musk, can send money out of nothing. In a recent conversation on Senator Ted Cruz’s podcast, Verdict with Ted Cruz, Musk explained how several federal agencies, including the Treasury, Defense, and Health and Human Services, are using systems that can issue payments without accountability or explanation.
How Magic Money Computers Work
Musk pointed out that most people would assume government computers are all connected, synchronized, and carefully tracking the flow of funds. However, he revealed this is not the reality. According to Musk, these “magic money computers” can send out payments without proper oversight, sometimes with errors that could be off by as much as 5% to 10%. He described them as systems that can create money “out of thin air,” leading to unexpected payments and contracts that continue long after they should have been shut off.
Bitcoin Advocates Respond
In response to Musk’s comments, Jameson Lopp, the chief security officer at Bitcoin custody firm Casa, chimed in with a familiar sentiment: “Bitcoin fixes this.” Bitcoin supporters have long argued that the cryptocurrency’s capped supply of 21 million coins makes it a hedge against the careless creation of fiat money. While traditional government systems might make money printing and uncontrolled spending possible, Bitcoin’s structure makes such practices impossible.
Waste and Incompetence Over Fraud
Interestingly, Musk doesn’t believe all of this is a part of a grand scheme. He suggests that around 80% of the cases he’s uncovered are simply waste and incompetence rather than deliberate fraud.
Musk shared examples where payments were going out of the Treasury Department without any payment code or explanation. In many cases, contracts that should have been canceled continued to funnel money to companies and nobody within the government seemed to notice or demand the money back.
He asked an important question: “Now, is that waste or fraud?” His observation highlights the lack of monitoring and follow-up within key departments.
Impact on Tesla and Growing Backlash
Musk’s dedication to uncovering government waste through his DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) efforts has come with its own set of challenges. His other business ventures, including Tesla, have suffered as a result. Tesla facilities across the United States have been vandalized by groups involved in the “Take down Tesla” movement.
These protestors oppose the cost-cutting measures Musk is implementing through DOGE. Adding to the chaos, Musk also discovered that government departments possess more media subscriptions, software services, and credit cards than they have employees sometimes even double the number. This discovery further fuels his argument that inefficiency, not conspiracy, is the root of the problem.
